Nueva Gerona - Isla de la Juventud
Äntligen är vi här! Vi har båda läst och hört mycket om den här ön att det känns så konstigt att nu faktiskt vara här! Det finns två sätt att ta sig hit på, antingen flyger man eller så åker man med båt! Enligt Lonely Planet är det jättejobbigt att åka båt hit och inget de rekommenderar men vi vill inte flyga för att det inte bara är sämre för miljön utan även dyrare än båt. Som vanligt överdrev Lonely Planet jättemycket, båtresan hit gick jättesmidigt och tog bara 2,5 timme (plus 1,5 med buss från Havanna till hamnen), det verkade dock som att alla andra lyssnade på Lonely Planet då vi var de enda utlänningarna på hela båten! Hur som helst, vi anlände hit till Nueva Gerona igår eftermiddag och det slog oss båda direkt hur rent det är i den här lilla staden jämfört med resten av Kuba. Det är heller inga utländska turister här, bara kubanska. De utländska turisterna bor på det fina hotellet nära den bästa dykningen. Den här ön har så mycket historia bakom sig – bland annat var det här en fängelseö för bara 60-70 år sedan där bland annat Fidel Castro satt fängslad och själva fängelset står kvar här än idag för att få besöka. Förutom det finns det bra trekking uppe bland bergen och det är även på den här ön som karibens bästa dykning ska finnas, bland annat ett flertal vrakdyk – wah!

Finally we’re here! Both of us have read and heard so much about this island that it feels strange to now be here! There are two ways to get here from the main land – by air or by boat. According to Lonely Planet it is very unpleasant go by boat but we don’t want to fly unless there are no other options and the boat is also cheaper. The boat ride was not unpleasant at all though and only took 2,5 hours (plus 1,5 hour on a bus to get to the boat from Havana), it seemed like all the other backpackers listened to Lonely Planet since we were the only foreigners on the boat. Anyway, we arrived to Nueva Gerona here in Isla de la Juventud and we were both stunned by this little town. It is so clean here compared to the rest of Cuba that we’ve seen so far and there are no foreigners here, just Cuban tourists. The foreign tourists don’t live here but at the big fancy hotel resort close to the amazing diving spots. This island has so much history behind it – about 60-70 years ago this island was a big prison, Fidel Castro was one of the people who were prisoned here. The prison is still here today to go visit which we’ll definitely do! Apart from that there are good trekking here on the mountains around the city and the island holds some of the best diving in the Caribbean, wreck diving too – wah!
